Friends of Norfolk Animal Care Center
2016 Annual Report

Dear Friends,

Thank you for helping Friends of Norfolk Animal Care Center give some of the most challenged animals in our community a second chance in 2016.

Because of your loyal support for our organization we were able to increase our outreach in the community and strengthen our adoption programs, which directly placed more than 1,000 animals in loving homes and helped the Norfolk Animal Care Center reach its highest ever adoption total of 2,393. Our subsidized adoption event for December was the most successful month ever for our shelter – 280 animals went home for the holidays!

We set out to increase partnerships with not only individuals, but businesses in our community this year and we succeeded beyond our expectations.  You remain the driving force of our mission and thanks to our expanded community of animal lovers like you we broke our fundraising record for the first time in 11 years – raising more than $100,000. Along the way, we added several new board members, volunteers and foster families to our ranks as well.

In 2016, more than 400 animals were adopted because of the foster program, up 25 percent from 2015. One of those animals was a tiny kitten named Piper, rescued from a sewer drain by City of Norfolk Public Works employees on one of the coldest January days last year. While nursing her back to health, we also discovered she was born without functioning eyelids, which required multiple surgeries to correct. Thanks to your generous outpouring of support she received these surgeries by traveling all the way to Pennsylvania to be seen and treated by a specialist.  Plucky Piper is now flourishing in her new adoptive home, which she shares with her human companions, another cat and a doting St. Bernard.

With supporters like you, who give their money, time and talent in support of our mission, we were able to make the world a better place for animals in 2016.  We owe our deepest gratitude to you for being a part of our success. We are looking forward to much more in 2017.
