2017 Annual Report

Friends of Norfolk Animal Care 2016 Annual ReportDear Friends,

Thank you for helping Friends of Norfolk Animal Care Center give some of the most challenged animals in our community a second chance in 2018.

Because of your loyal support for our organization we were able to increase our outreach in the community and strengthen our adoption programs, which directly placed more than 1,000 animals in loving homes and helped the Norfolk Animal Care Center surpass 2,000 adoptions for the 5 consecutive year. We are particularly proud of our outreach efforts with the Norfolk Police Department. We partnered with them last summer to create a heartwarming calendar, "Norfolk's Finest and Furriest of 2018." The benefit calendar featuring officers, shelter animals, and some of the most beautiful and treasured landmarks in the city. To date, we have raised $7,327.

We set out to increase partnerships with not only individuals, but businesses in our community this year and we succeeded beyond our expectations.  You remain the driving force of our mission and thanks to our expanded community of animal lovers like you we had another record-breaking year for fundraising – bringing in more than $100,000. Our FNACC family expanded too - we added several new board members, volunteers and foster families.

In 2017, more than 500 animals were adopted because of the foster program, up 25 percent from 2016. One of those animals was a sweet senior dog named Lucy, surrendered in February after concerned citizens contacted the Animal Control Unit because of her condition. She was underweight, missing most of her fur and so itchy she could barely stand up from all the scratching. Not only did staff discover she was hyperthyroid, but she was suffering from entropian, an abnormality of the eyelids that causes them to roll inward, irritating the corneas. She was put on a strict regimen of antibiotics, medicated baths and a grain-free diet to help with her skin issues and scheduled for surgery to fix her eyelids.

Through it all she kept her sunny disposition and became an immediate staff (and Facebook) favorite. Her swift recovery was a boost to staff morale. She found her forever home in early May.

With supporters like you, who give their money, time and talent in support of our mission, we were able to make the world a better place for animals in 2017.  We owe our deepest gratitude to you for being a part of our success. We are looking forward to much more this coming year..
